AN Aberystwyth software engineer has spoken of his experience as an RAF reservist.

While he isn’t leading a team of software engineers at the National Library of Wales, Dan Field, 40, is performing a vital role in helping keep the hi-tech communication systems of the Royal Air Force secure and working.

Senior Aircraftman Dan Field is a Cyberspace Communications Specialist with No. 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron, the only RAF Reserve squadron in Wales.

As part of Reserves Day, a national day of celebration of military reservists which took place last Wednesday, Dan spoke about his career path and why he enjoys his role in the air force so much.

“I’d always had some interest in the air force,” said Dan. “I approached my A-Levels with a view to becoming a pilot, but my life took a different turn and now I work in IT, so joining the RAF Reserves to work with computers as a CCS allows me to experience the best of both worlds.”

Dan’s role as a CCS sees him manage equipment like tactical satellite systems and airfield radars, set up communications systems for the RAF out on operations or on exercise, and provide basic IT support on RAF bases.

“Cyberspace communications looked like an exciting job and there was obvious crossover to what I do everyday,” added Dan.

“But the role in the RAF, and being a reservist in general, is so varied that I have the opportunity to do the kinds of things I’d never get a chance to in my civilian job.”

Dan feels he has gained a lot out of his reserve service, from developing his general leadership and organisational skills, to earning technical qualifications, all of which he has brought back to his civilian work to make him a better employee.
