THE World Enduro Championship return to Mid Wales on the first weekend in August after a 16-year absence in running the Enduro GP of Wales.
The event is being hosted by Rhayader Motor Cycle & Light Car Club in partnership with Saintswell Events.
The Rhayader Motor Club is renowned for organising prestigious events and first ran a round of the World Enduro Championship back in 1992. The club has carved out a deserved reputation as one the UK's leading motorcycle clubs.
In order to deliver the highest quality event, the Enduro GP of Wales will receive support from many enduro clubs and individuals.
The action-packed event is held on 2-4 August with competitors covering a 200-mile route over the weekend.
The Paddock, Super Test and Cross Test are based at Cwmythig Hill, near Rhayader and the event will use the Abbeycwmhir forests to link in with Saintswell Enduro Centre where the Extreme and Enduro Tests will be situated.
The event has attracted competitors from all over Europe, America, New Zealand, Australia and Chile.
The entry is headed by Britain’s World Champions of Steve Holcombe and Brad Freeman with stiff competition from series leader, Spainard Josep Garcia and Italian Andrea Verona.
The event will also include for the first time a round of the Women’s World Enduro Championship which is currently led by Spainard Mireia Badia. As the current World Champion, Wigan’s Jane Daniels takes a year off on maternity leave, British hopes rely on Rosie Rowett and Nieve Holmes.
Holcombe said: “Everyone in the UK knows how good Rhayader Club enduro events are, and how strong the club is.
“The fact that they're organising an Enduro GP World Championship event in 2024 is great news.
“For all the British riders, all the British enduro fans, it's going to be an event to remember.
“I can't wait to ride on British soil - the Enduro GP of Wales is going to be an amazing weekend!”
The event will consist of three days of riding starting with the Super Test on Friday evening at Cwmythig Hill.
The Saturday and Sunday will see the world’s best riders compete in two full days of enduroing.
Bringing the World Championship back to the UK does not come cheap with huge investment of new infrastructure at Cwmythig and Saintswell to bring the facilities up to the standard required to run the event together with organisational costs, such as live timing and medical facilities.
Despite exploring avenues of grants and funding they are 95% self-funded, therefore, to make the GP a success they are ticketing the event. The tickets are priced to give amazing value for money and will give full access to the Paddock and the entertainment based at Cwmythig, the Super Test and all three special Tests.
Event schedule
Thursday evening sees the historic market town of Rhayader play host to a parade lap for riders and a chance to hear from the top GP contenders.
Friday: The day begins at the test track as riders have a brief shakedown on Welsh soil, they then head to technical control before bikes get placed in parc ferme. The real action begins with the Super test in the late afternoon. Refreshments will be available all evening.
Saturday: A full day of action begins in the morning, and concludes with podium presentations and autograph sessions in the afternoon. Plus, check out all the trade stands, demos, and more all around the event grounds and enjoy another evening of entertainment on Saturday night.
Sunday: The final day begins on Sunday morning with another full day of riding. Again there will be prize presentations and huge celebrations to top off an incredible weekend of world-class riding and entertainment.
