YSGOL y Preseli’s impressive years seven and eight girls’ athletics team have become the Welsh Schools champions by winning the NASUWT Cup in Brecon.
The Crymych girls won four of their events, with team captain and sprinter Ella Wintle smashing the competition record in the 300m in a time of 42.1 secs.
Preseli were also represented by the boys’ years seven and eight team, who took third place in the Plate competition.
After the success of the Welsh Schools’ National Track and Field Championships in Cardiff, the NASUWT Cymru Cup and Plate Finals took place at the Penlan Arena athletics track in Brecon.
A total of 41 schools had progressed to represent the eight districts of Dyfed, Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff and Vale, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales, with 63 teams competing at the national finals.
It was split into two sets of age groups, the under 14s for years seven and eight and the under 16s for years nine and 10, with each discipline on the track and field counting towards each team’s score.
The sprint hurdles started the action at 12 midday and team scores were announced five hours later when all events had been calculated and recorded.
Other disciplines to take place included the 1,500m, 200m, 300m, 100m, 800m, 4 x 100m Relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot, Discus and Javelin.
Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf, Cardiff took a comfortable win to win the Charlie Hughes Trophy for the best overall performance, for a second successive year.
The five schools from the Dyfed district, who had won their age groups in the Carmarthen final to reach the national final were Queen Elizabeth High, Ysgol Bro Myrddin, Sir Thomas Picton Ysgol Dyffryn Taf and Ysgol y Preseli.
The best result of the day came from Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych, who were winners of the U14s Girls Cup competition, finishing off in style with a win in the relay to ensure victory by a single point.
In the Under 16 Boys, Sir Thomas Picton were second in the Plate, along with Ysgol Bro Myrddin in the Cup. Queen Elizabeth School secured third in the Under 14s Girls Cup, and Ysgol Dyffryn Taf were fifth in the Cup for the U14s Boys.
