A YOUNG striker who was born in Aberystwyth has been selected to represent Wales at Under-21 level in the next window of international fixtures.
Luke Jephcott has been called up by manager Paul Bodin for the UEFA Under-21 Euro Qualifying fixtures against Moldova and Germany.
And the 20-year-old will be looking to take his club form onto the international stage as Plymouth Argyle’s top scorer this season with five goals in League One.
Jephcott made his Wales Under-21s debut as a substitute when they lost 1-0 away to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica at the start of September.
He then missed Wales’ 5-0 defeat away to Belgium last month after a spell out of the Argyle side due to a thigh injury.
Jephcott has now been recalled for Wales’ final two Group 9 qualifying games, the first of which is against Moldova at the Raceourse Ground, Wrexham, on Friday, 13 November, followed by an away game against Germany in Braunshweig on Tuesday.
Wales cannot qualify for the 2021 European Championship finals as they are bottom of Group 9 with a record of two wins and four defeats from their six matches.
Germany can guarantee their qualification, ahead of Belgium, by beating Wales on Tuesday.
The campaign has been a mixed affair for Bodin’s side.
Following a positive start with a 1-0 win against Belgium, there has been no clear runner in the group with Wales’ only other win coming in a 1-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Although currently bottom of the group Wales could still finish as high as third place by the end of the campaign.
A change in format to the qualifying round due to the Covid-19 pandemic now means the nine group winners and five best runners-up will be joined by hosts Hungary and Slovenia in the finals, with no play-off route.
