BORTH United closed the gap on leaders Kerry at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League division two as they registered a convincing 5-1 win against a Presteigne side that played most of the match with 10 men at Park Avenue.

Two goals each from Ryan Davies and Liam Lewis, and a James Davies effort moved Borth within nine points of the frontrunners, with one game still in hand.

With heavy storms putting paid to the match being played at Uppingham Fields, the fixture was switched to Aberystwyth Town’s 3G playing surface, and the rains held off when the match got under way.

Presteigne’s lively Matt Jones took just five minutes to open the scoring when he cut in from the left wing and blasted a fierce shot passed Borth goalkeeper Sean Gates, courtesy of a slight deflection.

Borth, however, were back on level terms within minutes as James Davies’ neat lob led to Ryan Davies’s low shot beating the Presteigne keeper - and the Crows then went ahead with a superb 35 yard strike by James Davies into the top corner.

Presteigne were then reduced to 10 men, when Owen Williams was shown the red card, and Borth capitalised when Ben Jones slipped in Liam Lewis, who rounded the keeper and set up Ryan Davies to finish for his second goal of the afternoon.

As half-time approached Sean Gates made a superb save from Matt Jones to preserve Borth’s 3-1 lead at the interval.

To be fair, Presteigne didn’t lose heart, but Liam Lewis’s hard work paid off as he scored Borth’s fourth goal of the game.

Borth made it 5-1 when, from a long punt from keeper Gates into the Presteigne penalty area, Liam Lewis was able to lob the keeper for his second goal.

Aberystwyth University meanwhile slipped down to eighth place in division two after a 4-1 defeat away at Newbridge, despite a reply scored by Tom Spicer.

Goals from Alphie Stonefield, Ollie Woods and a brace from Aeron Powell earned the hosts the points, as they moved up into a top five league position.

David Edwards scored twice and Joe Ephraim also netted as third-placed Dolgellau registered their 10th league win with a 3-2 win at Llansantffraid, who scored through Tom Gayle and Jack Davies.

Goals from Joe Haycock Max Mclaughlin and a Josh McGlynn penalty sealed a 3-1 win for Churchstoke away against Four Crosses, who had taken the lead with a lob from 35 yards by Josh Biggs.

Jamie Price scored twice as Builth Wells notched a 2-1 win over a depleted Abermule, who had earlier cancelled out Price’s opener through David Anthony.
