ABERYSTWYTH Town boss Neville Powell has boosted his squad by signing midfielder Damien Allen from Welsh Premier rivals Bangor City and striker Kurt Sherlock from Radcliffe.

The Seasiders, however, have also confirmed the departures of influential captain Jonny Spittle and central defensive partner John McKenna.

Spittle has linked-up again with Andy Morrison, his former assistant manager at Airbus UK Broughton, by signing for Connah’s Quay Nomads, whilst McKenna is heading for New Zealand.

Allen, 31, has meanwhile linked back up with former boss Powell at Aber, having signed for Bangor seven seasons ago, where he became captain, making 151 appearances for the Citizens.

The Cheadle-born player came through Stockport County’s Youth system, and made 57 League appearances for the Hatters, before a loan spell at Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

He played 20 times for Morecambe, before joining Bangor, after spells with Halifax, Bury and Colwyn Bay.

“He is one of the most highly respected and prized midfielders in the Welsh Premier League,” said a club statement. “His signing is a massive boost to Neville Powell and his squad as they prepare for the second phase in the Play Off Conference, which begins in the first weekend of February.

“Everyone at Aberystwyth Town welcomes Damian to the Club, and we all wish him all the very best for a successful period at Park Avenue.”

Meanwhile Kurt Sherlock has followed January signing Tom Owens in joining the club from Radcliffe FC.

Liverpudlian Sherlock, aged 26, made five appearances for the Evo-Stick side earlier in the season, scoring four goals, and he has previously played for Formby, Bootle, Runcorn Linnets, Stalybridge and Marine.

The Seasiders, however, were dealt a major blow with news that influential skipper Jonny Spittle had chose to leave the Club, after his contract expired last Friday, having made 20 appearances and scoring three goals.

Fellow defender McKenna has also played his last game for the Seasiders, having made 21 appearances since joining this season, scoring twice.

“Centre back John McKenna has played his last game before moving back to New Zealand, where he has been offered a full time work opportunity,” confirmed a club statement.

“Centre back partner Jonny Spittle also informed the Club this morning that he will reject an extension to his current deal, and will leave the Club when his contract expires on Friday.

“Aberystwyth Town thanks both players for their contributions and wishes them all the best for the future.

“The supporters should be reassured that the club is in active negotiations with a number of replacements, and our defence will be strengthened before the end of the month.”

Meanwhile Aberystwyth have also moved to sign goalkeeper Adam Walters from Aberystwyth University as cover for number one Chris Mullock.

Walters has previously been with York City, Selby Town, Barmouth and Dyffryn Utd and the University side.
