DEWI Stars completed the double when they added the South Cards Cup to the Costcutter Ceredigion League division two title with a 3-0 win over New Quay at Ffostrasol on Saturday.
In an entertaining final which was a credit to the league, the final scoreline did not do justice to New Quay, who played their part in a closely fought encounter - the difference being that the Stars were far more clinical in front of goal.
It was 1-0 at the interval, the Stars’ goal being put away by leading scorer Ifan Thomas with a calm finish. Guto Green, who was back to his sharpest, had two gilt-edged chances to increase the lead but he narrowly missed.
New Quay pushed for an equaliser after the break and stretched the Stars’ defence, with Craig Richardson prompting at every opportunity, but with a solid back three of veteran Andrew Jones, Steffan Owens and Daniel Williams in front of talented young custodian Iestyn Edwards, clear chances were limited.
Gethin Thomas was having a huge battle for supremacy with Richardson in the middle of the park, and both Marc Jones and Oscar Cayo Evans worked their socks off in support, while the two wide men of Leon Holmes and Siencyn Jones ran themselves to the ground.
It was Oscar Cayo that settled any nerves with two clinical finishes, in the 70th minute and then with the very last kick of the game. First of all he was put through by sub Nathan Driver to score, and finally by Ifan Thomas.
Subs Rhys Evans, Chris Biddulph, Rhodri Edwards and Daniel Thomas also played their part in what has been a memorable season for the Llanddewi villagers, who now look forward to making their return to division one.
