AFTER a few weeks of cup action, Borth United made a winning return to action in the MMP Mid Wales League division two as Jonathan Evans and Guto Huws both scored twice in an excellent 4-2 win over table toppers Newbridge-on-Wye.
The visitors had the best of the opening exchanges at Uppingham Fields, with the lively Lyndon Jones prominent on the left wing, but Borth also created some good chances and took the lead on 25 minutes.
Gareth Kelsall-Hughes’ rasping shot rebounded off the bar and the alert Guto Huws was on hand to slide the ball home.
Within 10 minutes Newbridge had equalised, however, as Jake Bufton scored at the far post from a left wing cross.
Borth kept composure and they regained the lead in the final minutes of the half as Guto Huws’s pin-point cross was met by Jonathan Evans to score with a superb header for a 2-1 lead at the interval.
Newbridge gathered momentum as the second half got under way, but Borth increased their lead on the hour when Gareth Kelsall-Hughes was brought down in the penalty area, and Jonathan Evans made no mistake from the spot.
The visitors reduced the deficit within five minutes as Ollie Woods scored with a cool finish, and as Newbridge pushed for the equaliser, Borth capitalised when some fine play from the forwards allowed Guto Huws to fire home with a low shot, to secure them a morale-boosting win.
Hay St Mary’s moved top of division two as they notched a 4-3 win over Dyffryn Banw, having hit back from Alwyn Jones’ opener to net three first half goals.
Striker Matty Tong slotted home after good run down the left hand side by Brendan Hackett, and Jack Evans then netted a quick-fire double for a 3-1 lead.
Banw came out with all guns blazing at the start of the second half to get themselves level at 3-3 through a Gerallt Davies header and a Rich Williams strike.
With 10 minutes to go, however, Hay right back Tom James whipped the ball to the head of top scorer Jack Biggs, who made no mistake to score the winner.
Aberystwyth University, playing their seventh successive away match, are still seeking their first league points of the season after they slipped to a 3-1 reverse against Waterloo Rovers. Two goals from Tom Ellis and one by Nathan James secured the points for the Welshpool side, despite Liam Powell scoring the reply.
Rhayader ran out 2-0 winners against Presteigne, with goals from Ryan Addison and Jamie Evans, whilst goals from Charlie Jellett, Jack Williams and Tom Evans secured Montgomery Town a 3-1 home win against Dolgellau, who scored their goal through David Edwards.
David Laird was on target for Abermule as they drew 1-1 at Machynlleth, with Simon Davies finding the net for the hosts.
