BORTH United made it back-to-back wins over local rivals Bow Street as they marched into second round of the MMP Mid Wales League Cup with a 3-1 victory at Uppingham Fields.

Borth, in confident mood after their JD Welsh Cup win over their rivals the previous weekend, took charge courtesy of first half goals from James Davies, Clive Morgan and Josh Ferreira.

Tom Williams netted a reply for Bow Street, but there was to be no way back.

The Magpies had been in no mood to relinquish their hold on the trophy they had won last season, and in a cagey opening to the match both teams created some good goal scoring chances .

Borth were unlucky not to take the lead after 10 minutes when a hesitant defence allowed Ryan Davies a half chance, only to see his shot hit the base of the post.

Home pressure told on 20 minutes, however, as James Davies’ header from a corner kick gave Borth the lead.

The Magpies were in double trouble when Guto Huws’ perseverance on the right wing resulted in his pin-point cross to Clive Morgan, who headed home.

The division two side piled on the pressure, and Gethin ap Dafydd’s rasping shot was tipped over the bar by keeper Alex Pennock.

With half-time imminent, however, Josh Ferreira increased Borth’s lead with a diving header from a corner kick to leave the visitors with a mountain to climb.

Bow Street worked hard to reduce the deficit as the second half progressed, but the Borth defence held firm to protect Ben Willis’ goal.

The Magpies did give themselves a glimmer of hope in the closing minutes when Tom Williams’ free kick was perfectly placed beyond Willis, but despite a late onslaught from the visitors Borth held on for another memorable win.

Aberaeron marched on with a 4-0 win over Aberystwyth University, who got their campaign under way after the usual delayed start. Ifan Burrell led the way with a hat-trick, with Gareth Severs also on target.

Abermule edged through on penalties after drawing 3-3 with derby rivals Kerry, with Mule goals from Jack Weaver, Huw McGrath and Shane Davies. Kerry had netted though a David Laird own goal, a Luke Mumford free kick and Ben Davies.

Richie Evans and Andy Evans both scored twice as Carno eased to a 5-0 away win over Machynlleth, with Harry Holt also netting.

Tom Evans meanwhile scored a hat-trick as Montgomery Town beat Churchstoke 4-0, with the visitors also conceding an own goal.

Builth Wells won 3-0 at Newbridge, despite having Dane Griffiths sent off on his debut after 25 minutes.

First half goals from Lee James and Tom Bethell set up the win, with Luke Hicks also netting a late penalty.

Kieran Jones and David Edwards were on target as Dolgellau won 2-0 away at rivals Tywyn/Bryncrug.
