Dolgellau (152) beat Llanrwst (63) by 89 runs

DOLGELLAU have avoided the drop with a last match victory against Llanrwst at The Marian on Saturday.

Llanrwst are now relegated to Division 2 along with Bangor 2nds. Winning their last three matches meant that Dolgellau finished eighth in the 12-team Division 1.

Dolgellau’s captain Rob Humphreys won the toss and opted to bat, his team making 152 in 43 overs and then dismissing the visitors for 63 in 30 overs on what was a difficult batting surface, Phil Leeds taking five wickets and Mark Edmondson three.

Llanrwst suffered a cruel blow in the 12th over of the game when leading bowler Alwyn Williams had to leave the field with a finger injury, done while fielding, and took no further part in the match, a hospital visit required.

Dolgellau openers Jack Williamson and Sion Francis laid an excellent foundation with a partnership of 84 in 25 overs.

However, from the following 18 overs all 10 wickets went down for the addition of 68 runs, skipper Aron Hughes taking five wickets.

Williamson, who struck six boundaries in his 37, was the first to be dismissed, caught and bowled by Lee Thomas.

Ten runs later Francis was also caught and bowled, this time by Iwan Edwards. Francis was the home side’s top scorer, hitting five fours in his 40.

From 94 for 2 in the 28th over there were regular dismissals, only number three Jaco Oosthuizen and number five Leeds notching double figures.

Morgan Yorke gave a return catch to Aron Hughes and Leeds made 12 before he was bowled by Edwards; 122 for 4.

Humphreys was adjudged to be caught by the keeper Joseph Guy off Hughes, Dave Jenkins bowled by Nathan Jones and Edmondson caught by Elliott Mutch off Hughes to make it 143 for 7.

The last three wickets could only add nine runs as the innings closed on 152 with two overs remaining.

Jack Williams became a 4th victim for Hughes, caught by Stefan Horan before Oosthuizen was bowled by Jones for 24 and finally Joe Williamson caught and bowled by Hughes, his 5th wicket.

Moc Llywelyn was the not out batsman on 4. Aron Hughes claimed 5 for 26 from 8 overs, Nathan Jones 2 for 20 also from 8, Iwan Edwards 2 for 36 from 9 and Lee Thomas 1 for 28 from 9, while Elliott Mutch bowled 9 overs for 39 runs.

Llanrwst lost their first two wickets with just a single run on the board. In Mark Edmondson’s second over opener Aled Hughes was bowled and number three Aron Hughes was lbw.

Nathan Jones and opener Iwan Edwards took it to 19 at which Edwards was bowled for 9, a third wicket for Edmondson.

At the other end Oosthuizen was also keeping things quiet, the batters finding it difficult to score. Jones and Horan had an alliance of 29 before it stood at 48 for 4 in the 22nd over, Horan out lbw to Leeds for 9.

Thereafter just 13 runs were added as Llanrwst were all out for 63 in the 30th over, the injured Alwyn Williams unable to bat.

Iestyn Williams bowled by Leeds and Alex Evans caught and bowled by Jack Williamson. Jones made 28 and was the only batter to reach double figures, eventually bowled by Leeds in the 28th over.

Leeds then brought about the denouement to the season by having Joseph Guy caught by Edmondson and Mutch lbw, Thomas the not out batter. Leeds claimed 5 for 13 from 6 overs, Edmondson 3 for 23 from 9 and Jack Williamson 1 for 11 from 6 overs; Oosthuizen bowling nine overs and conceding just 13 runs as Dolgellau won by 89 runs.

Jaco Oosthuizen is the season’s top run scorer with 468 runs and Morgan Yorke took most wickets, 22.
