Coleg Ceredigion students have been named as one of the top three teams of winners in a competition called Game Jam, organised by WorldSkills UK.
Game Jam brought together students from across the UK to compete and demonstrate their skills in game design.
Taking part at Coleg Ceredigion were all students who are studying an OCR level three Cambridge technical extended diploma in IT.
The day-long event challenged participants to create and build their own obstacle course based on a game called Momentum.
Aled Richards, Coleg Ceredigion IT lecturer said: “The students showed excellent communication and teamworking skills in creating their games. It was great to see them getting fully involved in the competition and expressing themselves to build fun and challenging games.
“The students said that they found it was a great opportunity to learn the basics of using Unreal Engine 5, a professional game development platform. It was a really enjoyable experience working with other students and having something at the end of the day that they were proud of and could download and play.”
As part of the course, students design and make a game and Game Jam has allowed them to achieve this whilst learning to use new software, developing new game development skills and it has also brought a sense of camaraderie into the classroom.
Game Jam, organised by WorldSkills UK, brought together 27 teams in an immersive experience, following a set brief to design and develop a high-quality game, applying fundamental design skills and creatively implementing key features such as movement and speed.
Coleg Ceredigion were only two points away from first place and one point from second, with Barnsley College winning first and The City of Liverpool College winning second.
Myfyrwyr Coleg Ceredigion ymhlith y tri thîm gorau yn Game Jam y DU
Mae myfyrwyr Coleg Ceredigion wedi’u henwi fel un o’r tri thîm gorau o enillwyr mewn cystadleuaeth o’r enw Game Jam, a drefnwyd gan WorldSkills UK.
Daeth Game Jam â myfyrwyr o bob rhan o’r DU ynghyd i gystadlu ac arddangos eu sgiliau mewn dylunio gemau.
Roedd yr holl fyfyrwyr sy'n astudio diploma estynedig technegol Caergrawnt OCR lefel tri mewn TG yng Ngholeg Ceredigion yn cymryd rhan.
Roedd y digwyddiad diwrnod o hyd yn herio cyfranogwyr i greu a llunio eu cwrs rhwystrau eu hunain yn seiliedig ar gêm o'r enw Momentum.
Dywedodd Aled Richards, darlithydd TG Coleg Ceredigion: “Dangosodd y myfyrwyr sgiliau cyfathrebu a sgiliau gweithio mewn tîm ardderchog wrth greu eu gemau. Roedd yn wych eu gweld yn cymryd rhan lawn yn y gystadleuaeth ac yn mynegi eu hunain wrth lunio gemau hwyliog a heriol.
“Dywedodd y myfyrwyr eu bod yn gweld ei fod yn gyfle gwych i ddysgu hanfodion defnyddio Unreal Engine 5, sef llwyfan datblygu gemau proffesiynol. Roedd yn brofiad pleserus iawn gweithio gyda myfyrwyr eraill a chael rhywbeth ar ddiwedd y dydd yr oeddent yn falch ohono ac y gallent ei lawrlwytho a’i chwarae.
”Fel rhan o'r cwrs, mae myfyrwyr yn dylunio a gwneud gêm ac mae Game Jam wedi caniatáu iddynt gyflawni hyn wrth ddysgu defnyddio meddalwedd newydd, datblygu sgiliau datblygu gemau newydd ac mae hefyd wedi dod â synnwyr o gyfeillgarwch i'r ystafell ddosbarth.
Daeth Game Jam, a drefnwyd gan WorldSkills UK, â 27 o dimau ynghyd mewn profiad ymdrochol, yn dilyn briff penodol i ddylunio a datblygu gêm o ansawdd uchel, gan ddefnyddio sgiliau dylunio sylfaenol a rhoi nodweddion allweddol megis symudiad a chyflymder ar waith mewn modd creadigol.
Dau bwynt yn unig oedd rhwng Coleg Ceredigion a’r safle cyntaf ac roeddent un pwynt o’r ail safle, gyda Choleg Barnsley yn fuddugol a Choleg Dinas Lerpwl yn cipio’r ail safle.
