YWS Gwynedd and his band were the main winners at Welsh-language music awards Gwobrau’r Selar in a huge event at Aberystwyth Students’ Union over the weekend.

The musician, who hails originally from Blaenau Ffestiniog, picked up four awards on the night – Best Album for his second LP, Anrheoli, released in April; Best Music Video for Drwy Dy Lygid Di; Best Song for Drwy Dy Lygid Di; and Best Band.

Yws has tasted plenty of glory in the past, winning Best Solo Artist three times, along with numerous other categories over the last three years, but he has emphasised that the new album is firmly a project by the whole band, and accordingly all members were present in Aberystwyth to celebrate their success.

It was a successful night for up-and-coming artists as well – the young band from Anglesey and Gwynedd, Gwilym, took home the award for Best Breakthrough Act, while another of that category’s shortlisted acts, Pasta Hull, won the Best Artwork award for the cover of their debut album, Achw Met.

“Gwobrau’r Selar has been awesome again this year, with over 1000 people coming together in Aberystwyth to celebrate the amazing Welsh medium contemporary music scene we have at the moment,” said Gwobrau’r Selar organiser Owain Schiavone.
