A SENSATIONAL Porthmadog swimmer is the fastest in the UK in backstroke for her age category.
Medi Harris, 14, has enjoyed a successful summer representing her country and picking up a slew of records and medals.
Medi was selected by Swim Wales to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas last month.
She came back with a silver medal in the 50m backstroke, bronze medal in the 200m backstroke and managed fourth place in the 100m backstroke.
Once she returned from the Bahamas she went straight to Sheffield for the British Summer Championships, winning an impressive three golds in the backstroke events.
She also broke the Welsh junior record in the 50m and 100m back in the Bahamas and equaled the 200m back record.
Within two days of returning home she received a letter stating she had also broken the British Age group record in the 50m back whilst in the Bahamas and is subsequently ranked first in the UK for backstroke.
Ellie Harris, Medi’s mother, is justifiably delighted with her daughter’s achievements.
“Her dad and I would like to say that we’re extremely proud of her,” she told the Cambrian News.
“Seeing her achieve what she did in the Youth Commonwealth Games and the British Championships exceeded our wildest expectations.
“We would also like to thank the coaches of Caernarfon Swimming Club, Swim Gwynedd, and Swim Wales for helping Medi to fulfil her potential.”
Bron Hill, the teenager’s swimming coach, added: “Medi has worked extremely hard to achieve all her records.
“Getting up at 4.30am four mornings a week as well as four evening swim sessions is not an easy task at any age let alone for a 14-year-old."See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online on Thursday
