COUNCIL chiefs have been blamed for a worrying increase in fly-tipping incidents in the Aberystwyth area.

Penparcau councillor Brenda Haines told fellow members of the town council that she often sees illegally dumped household items along the cycle path between Morrisons and Aberystwyth Harbour.

Cllr Haines blamed the increase on the amount Ceredigion County Council charges for household collection.

“The problem is becoming much worse. There are mattresses and beds, everything, and not only trolleys from supermarkets,” said Cllr Haines.

“I think half the problem is the price the council charges people — £32 — for a door to be collected.

“There are two down behind my shed now. If anyone wants them for firewood, they can come and get them.

“I don’t have £64 to spend on something like that. It is a big problem.”

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson: “A charge is made for the collection of up to six items of bulky household waste from domestic properties as a contribution towards the costs of providing this service.

“Everyone has a responsibility to deal with their waste in a legal and responsible way which is encouraged as part of Caru Ceredigion. Incidents of fly-tipping can be referred for consideration to the council’s technical services department on 01545 572572; or email [email protected]
