DO you have memories of the railway in Dolgellau? Do you remember Dolgellau or even Dolgelly station, as the sign once said?
The station opened in 1868 as the terminus of a Cambrian Railway branch from the coast and then became part of the Great Western route to Bala and Ruabon which explains the difference in architectural style on the two platforms. The line finally closed on 18 January 1965.
Liverpool Model Railway Society have faithfully reproduced a working model of the line from the north of Dolgellau down to Penmaenpool.
This model is now owned and exhibited by Dolgellau Partnership’s Railway Group.
As part of the next opening at August Bank Holiday, the group has taken on a new Oral History Project, by Townscape Heritage.
Their aim is to record as many memories of the railway as possible and the first of these will be available to hear at the Bank Holiday opening.
Anyone who at anytime worked or travelled even briefly on the line or even just remembers the passing of trains or arrival of passengers and goods is invited to add to this important history.
As well as these stories it is hoped that any artefacts or old photos people have can be brought along to be recorded at the same time.
It is hoped that the other important industries of Dolgellau will also have a chance to be remembered in the same way under the Oral History Project so please get in touch, and go to the Bank Holiday exhibition and talk to the organisers at Ebeneser Methodist Church, Meyrick Street, on 27 August, 12pm-4pm and 28 August, 10am-4pm.See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online now
