Madam,

I was at the dump last week delivering glass, cans and cardboard packaging to the appropriate areas.

While we were parked I watched some deposit large plastic tubs, filled with stuff, into the mixed waste. I retraced their steps to recover the tubs for the ‘hard plastic’ area.

The view of the skips’ contents broke my heart. Metal racks, children’s bicycle wheels, trays, clothing, glass – all recyclable stuff. Fifty per cent of what was there was destined for landfill!

Whilst we all moan about council tax charges and a lack of services, we are one of the financial drains!

The council has to pay about £100 a tonne to dump stuff into a hole in the ground. So, a 16-tonne lorry’s worth will cost them £1,600. And that’s just for one lorry!

If we are to support our environment and plant more trees and fund projects, we all need to be more mindful. Reducing our rubbish is like a big fundraiser.

Aren’t we lucky to have charity shops, Craft and Freecycle?

Why are we so backwards at moving forwards?

Help one another, be kind and let’s help the council help us in these turbulent times.

Yours etc, Sharon Millar, Pontrhydygroes, Ysbyty Ystwyth.
