THE public can visit an amazing new space near Machynlleth this week, following its unveiling on Channel 4.

On last Tuesday evening’s Amazing Spaces special, viewers saw carpenter Carwyn Lloyd Jones and others help to build a house, from scratch, in just 24 hours.

Situated at the Centre for Alternative Technology, it was built on one of the most rain-swept days of the year, and links into the 600-year-old Welsh legend of ‘Ty Unnos’, or ‘House in a Night’, whereby if you could build a house on common land in one night and light a fire in the hearth, you could claim the land as your own.

CAT chief executive Adrian Ramsay said: “It was a real pleasure to host the Amazing Spaces team, and the Ty Unnos cabin is a beautiful addition to the CAT site.

“Its location on the edge of the reservoir at the top of our Quarry Trail makes it an ideal space to teach about biodiversity and water conservation as well as giving visiting groups a space where they can relax and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.”

You can see the cabin for yourself this half term, and beyond, with special tours and talks as part of CAT’s school holiday activities. For more details, go to visit.org.uk for details.

“Local residents (SY20 and SY19 postcodes) get free entry to CAT so it’s a nice chance for people to come up and see the cabin for themselves,” a spokesperson for CAT explained.
