TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known and “hugely respected” Llanidloes businessman who passed away last week aged 82.
Mike Morgan, who died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on Saturday, 9 December, had run Hafren Furnishers – a staple of Llanidloes’s business scene for over 50 years – since 1965. Mike, of Church Street, started out as a milkman, and was a popular figure within the town, nicknamed ‘Mike the Milk’. While working his milk round, he founded Hafren Furnishers, a business that continues to this day, and his children have joined the family business.
In a statement, Hafren Furnishers said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of pioneering independent furniture retailer Mike Morgan on Saturday, 9 December.
“Mike founded Hafren Furnishers in 1965 while having the local milkround, hence ‘Mike the Milk’.
“His entrepreneurial skills saw unprecedented business growth in mid Wales, and from the early days Hafren has supplied customers all over the country.
“Hafren now operates from one of the largest retail showrooms in the country.
“Mike was a hugely respected figure in the industry over the last 50 years, always supported by his wife Anna.
“The three children Paul, Charlotte and Tim all play an active role in the business, which continues to thrive after 53 years.”
