TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-respected council clerk, former councillor and a “great servant” who died last week.
Robin Hughes, a grandfather-of-six was well known and respected character on the Llyn Peninsula, having served as a councillor for his hometown of Criccieth and latterly as a clerk. He also spent over 15 years as clerk for Pwllheli Council.
He died last Thursday, 8 November, aged 77 and a funeral was held for him this Wednesday.
Paying tribute, the chair of Criccieth Town Council, Elizabeth George said: “Since I joined Criccieth Town Council in 2002 I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with Robin first of all as a fellow councillor and later benefitting from his clear guidance and extensive knowledge as clerk to the council.
“Only last year I had a question about local government law and I knew one phonecall to Robin would save me hours of research and give me the answer I needed, which he, as always, was more than ready to provide.”
Pwllheli mayor Eric Wyn Roberts added: “In the sad passing of Mr Robin Hughes, Pwllheli Town Council and the community as a whole have lost a great servant. He was clerk for the Town Council since his appointment in 2002.
“Robin’s vast knowledge and experience of local government was invaluable and always a dependable source to everyone who needed it, including members of the public, councillors and other community and town clerks across north Wales and beyond.
“Robin was also always willing to volunteer at various events including Hwyl yr Wyl, St David’s Day Parade, Remembrance Day and civic ceremonies in the town. His thoroughness to detail was also evident in the safeguarding of the town council finances.
“His courteous and professional manner in dealing with people and council business was indeed a model for us all to follow. He will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing.
“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to his wife and family at this very sad time.
“May they take solace, that his hard work over the years was greatly appreciated by me and others.”
Robin leaves behind his wife Martha; his children (and children in law) Ellen, Steven, Alun and Emma; and grandchildren Daniel, Cian, Mia, Lois, Cara and Tomos.
