TRIBUTES have been paid to a Tregaron artist who is said to have “captured a story of rural Ceredigion in his art”.

Ogwyn Davies (pictured), whose paintings were inspired by buildings from Welsh landscapes, died on Boxing Day at the age of 90.

One of his most famous works was Soar y Mynydd, which depicts the iconic Ceredigion chapel, near where he lived.

Born in 1925 in Trebanos, Mr Davies studied at Swansea School of Art before working at Tregaron Comprehensive School.

“Ogwyn Davies captured a story of rural Ceredigion in his art,” said AM Elin Jones. “He brought colour and life to derelict farm buildings, telling a story of defiance, not despair. He was political in his work and a print of his IE mosaic (following the 1997 Assembly Referendum win) hangs on my Cardiff Bay office wall to this day.

“His script of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau in cement is also an iconic piece of Welsh art. He made a lasting impression on many people he taught, but his true legacy will be his art pieces on so many walls in Ceredigion and well beyond.”
