Madam,

Re the number of councillors on Gwynedd Council.

We continually read that Gwynedd Council is short of money. There is one quick and easy way of saving money and that is to drastically reduce the number of councillors.

Just compare the populations and the number of councillors with a place like Coventry where my elder son lives. The following are examples.

Aberdyfi has a population of 1,136 and has one councillor; Bryncrug and Llanfihangel has a population of 961 and has one councillor; Tywyn a population of 3,264 and has two councillors; Dolgellau has a populaton of 2,688 and has two councillors. So this means population per councillor is between 961 and 1,632.

In Coventry there are three councillors each for Bablake, with a population of 16,595; Wyken with a population of 17,747; St Michael’s with a population of 29,343; Lower Stoke with a population of 21,771; and Upper Stoke with a population of 20,237. That equates to population per councillor of between 5,532 and 9,781

As can be seen, the councillors in Coventry have far more constituents per councillor than the Gwynedd councillors.

I rest my case.

Yours etc,

Nigel Adams, Tywyn.
