A SUPERMARKET giant has stepped in to help north Ceredigion’s only foodbank to get donations after warnings last week it was running “dangerously short” of supplies to feed society’s most vulnerable people.

Donations for the Jubilee Storehouse foodbank, run by St Anne’s Church, Penparcau, and Llanychaearn Church, Rhydyfelin, had fallen “considerably” following the closure of Budgens supermarket last month and volunteers made calls for another supermarket to step in to help.

Now, thanks to the intervention of the Cambrian News, the large Tesco store at the Mill Street development has agreed to have a permanent collection point in the store.

It is hoped the collection point will be up and running this week – with the small Co-op in Penparcau also offering a donation point.

Contacted by the Cambrian News, Tesco Aberystwyth’s manager Christian Davies said he was “keen to help”.

“We currently do two big collections twice a year as part of our national push for Trussell Trust,” he said. “However, we are more than happy to have a foodbank collection point in store.

“We always try and support local groups, particularly where food is concerned.”

The Cambrian News put foodbank organiser Malcolm Dye in touch with Mr Davies and he said the confirmation of both Tesco and Co-op collecting points was “brilliant news”.
