AN ABERYSTWYTH swimming club for people with learning difficulties and disabilities are hoping to attract more members for their weekly meeting at Plascrug Leisure Centre.

The club, which has received donations to help meet the costs of hiring the pool, is run by Al Pritchard with support, and Al said it gave people with learning difficulties or disabilities the chance to get together and socialise and keep fit.

Al said: “We run a weekly swimming club for people with learning difficulties and disabilities.

“We hire both swimming pools at Plascrug Leisure Centre every Tuesday between 7pm and 8pm to provide the opportunity to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing through exercise and socialising.

“We adapt the pool to their needs; for some it is one of the very few opportunities that they have to socialise with their friends, for others it is their only chance to exercise and for Jacqueline Minchin it is a training session to be able to compete in both national and international competitions after she won a bronze in the Special Olympics last year.

“We began two-and-a-half years ago with the help of Community Chest and have had funding from Aberystwyth Business Club and Aberystwyth Town Council to continue running the club.”
