A NEW Quay schoolboy, who during the last week of school holidays became Ceredigion’s youngest lifesaver, is now an internet phenomenon.

The news of eight-year-old Steffan Williams twice rescuing people stuck on rocks off New Quay has gone viral across the globe.

After a journalist saw the article in the Cambrian News, Steffan and his parents were interviewed by the national press.

The story was then shared across social media and has featured in the New York Post, Miami Herald and even Hawaiian news websites.

“We are so proud of our boy,” said Steffan’s mum, Kate. “Since an early age he has been passionate about the water and particularly lifeboats – his dream is to join the lifeboat crew when he grows up.

“At the moment he is fully involved in supporting the Ceredigion Lifeboat Campaign and urges everyone to challenge the RNLI’s decision to downgrade the New Quay Lifeboat Station in 2020.”

Steffan said: “It is quite embarrassing really as I did what anyone would have done and helped when I could.

“I am more worried about losing the all-weather lifeboat, as once it is gone it’s gone forever.

“We have to have a big lifeboat in New Quay as when there are storms we will not have the right boat to help.”
