A RAILWAY station will be closed for the first three months of next year as upgrade work takes place at Penhelig Railway Station in Aberdyfi.

The station will be closed from Monday, 2 January until Friday, 30 March, as Network Rail engineers conduct the renovations.

The work will replace the existing timber platform with an improved structure coated with glass reinforced plastic, allowing improved access for all station users and requiring minimal maintenance.

Passengers will also benefit from new lighting along the platform.

At the same time, engineers will also be carrying out maintenance work at Copperhill Street and Penhelig Tunnels.

Due to fewer passengers using the station during the winter months, Arriva Trains Wales will be providing a taxi service on request during the upgrade work.

Chris Wildy, works delivery manager for Network Rail Wales and Borders, said: “The work taking place at Penhelig station will see passengers benefit from better facilities, including an improved platform and new lighting.

We would like to thank passengers for their patience as we work to upgrade the station.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners at Arriva Trains Wales to make sure passengers can get to where they need to be during the temporary closure.”

“We’re pleased to be seeing this investment in one of our most picturesque communities and we are really looking forward to seeing its completion and the benefits it will bring to local people and visitors alike.

“While it is taking place at a quieter time of the year to minimise the impact on customers, we still recognise the impact this closure will have and there will be a taxi service in place to the nearest station.”
