The son of a Teifi Valley woman who died from coronavirus at the height of the pandemic last year has now raised more than £38,000 in her memory through a series of challenges.

Gwyndaf Lewis, of Efailwen, has been praised for his “generosity and dedication” after raising a massive £38,000 last year for Glangwili Hospital in memory of his mum Undeg by completing a 50km run.

Last month he decided to put his running shorts back on to raise even more funds for the Intensive Care Unit “for the amazing dedication and care shown” to his mother.

This time around, Gwyndaf, 26, ran and cycled 96 miles in three days, around all the Young Farmers’ Clubs in Pembrokeshire, raising £2,258, which was shared between the Intensive Care Unit at Glangwili Hospital and the YFC.

In total, Gwyndaf has raised an amazing £38,388 for the Intensive Care Unit in the last 12 months in memory of his mother, who died in April 2020 aged just 59.

Mum-of-three Undeg died in Glangwili Hospital on her 29th wedding anniversary.

Originally from Saron, near Llandysul, Undeg lived in Efailwen and was well known in the Teifi Valley, having worked for many years at Siop y Frenni in Crymych and was also a long-serving clerk to Crymych Community Council.

She was also the secretary of the local paper Y Cardi Bach.

Last year, Gwyndaf set himself the challenge of running 32 times round nearby Feidr Sion, which is around a mile for each lap, and raised nearly £7,000 a few days after he announced his plans.

He was joined for parts of that challenge by his father Tudur and brother Rhodri.

Gwyndaf said: “Every year, I take on a number of challenges to raise much-needed funds for different charities close to my heart.

“This time around, I set myself the challenge of cycling and running around the 12 Pembrokeshire YFC clubs.

“I’m so pleased to have raised so much money for the Intensive Care Unit at Glangwili, where the staff gave my mam such good care.

“This is such a caring community that we live in, both Efailwen and nearby Crymych.

“The support I have received has been unbelievable.”

Senior Sister Tammy Bowen, of the Intensive Care Unit at Glangwili Hospital, said: “We would like to thank Gwyndaf for all his incredible fundraising activities over the last year.

“The money that he has raised will help towards funding for the patients in ITU.

“We can’t thank him enough for his generosity and dedication.”
