A PWLLHELI man has criticised the council for putting a bus stop on Caernarfon Road, calling the decision to place it there “pure madness”.
David Williams said council workers have been widening part of a path on the busy main road where he lives for over a week.
When he asked what they were doing, he said he was shocked to hear that a bus stop was being placed there and contacted the council.
“It’s a busy road which gets gridlocked in the summer,” he said.
“The council said they don’t need planning permission and didn’t have to tell us they were doing it, but I don’t understand how it’s been given the go-ahead.
“I think it must have been passed by someone who has never seen the road.
“It’s one of the most dangerous roads in Pwllheli. This is a terrible place to put it.
“Pure madness.
“I have lived here 12 years and when I pull up outside to unload it causes mayhem, and in the summer it’s gridlocked.
“It’s a hill, with double yellow lines on both sides of the road. There’s a bend at the top where the bus will stop.
“If people get cross and try to go round the bus, they won’t be able to see properly and there will be an accident.”
Mr Williams said the bus stop is moving from Sand Street to Caernarfon Road.
“They’ve moved it because people are literally sitting on the windowsills of houses waiting for the bus there, and my local councillor said it was also a health and safety matter after a couple of people were nearly run over.
“That’s fair enough, but moving it here is not the answer. It’s a silly place to put it, on such a dangerous road.”
Mr Williams said although some work is being done to widen part of the path, it won’t give people enough room to queue for the bus and others to walk past.
“People will have to step into the road,” he feared.
Gwynedd Council said: “Work is being carried out to move the bus stop currently located immediately in front of people’s homes on Y Traeth to a nearby location on a suitable piece of land near the junction to the Llys Madryn estate.
“The new bus stop will incorporate a shelter and will also create additional car parking space for nearby residents.
“This decision has been taken following concerns the currents site caused an obstruction for nearby residents.
“A road safety audit has been undertaken and we are confident the new location will provide an improved bus user experience, which complies with all relevant design standards.
“We expect work on the new bus stop will be completed in the coming weeks.”
