A DECADES-LONG fight for safety measures outside an Aberystwyth primary school has finally paid off.

Cllr Alun Lloyd Jones, who has been campaigning for a reduced speed limit outside Llanfarian Primary School for “a quarter of a century”, said he was “absolutely delighted” that a part-time 20mph speed limit will now be introduced on the A487 outside the school.

The Welsh Government announced last week that the new speed limit will operate outside the school in the mornings and afternoons when schoolchildren are arriving at or leaving school.

A 40mph “buffer zone” will also be extended further towards Chancery, reducing the size of the national speed limit zone as cars approach the village from the south.

The Welsh Government notice states: “The proposed order is necessary to ensure the safety of the public in connection with the pedestrian movements near Llanfarian Primary School on the A487 trunk road at Llanfarian, Ceredigion.”

Cllr Jones, who is also a school governor of over 30 years, said: “I am absolutely delighted.

But while Cllr Jones said he was grateful for the Welsh Government’s announcement, he said he would have liked to have seen ministers go further and has questioned how the speed limit will be policed.
