Madam,

On 22 July, 1966, I lost both my parents along with a brother and sister in the Barmouth ferry boat disaster at Penmaenpool.

I attended the 40th anniversary service on 22 July, 2006, when I suggested there should be a permanent memorial with the names of the 15 people on it to be placed at Penmaenpool, but nothing was forthcoming.

In the months leading up to the 50th anniversary service, on 22 July, 2016, I again campaigned for a memorial with the support of both Barmouth and Dolgellau councils and churches, along with support from the MP Liz Saville-Roberts.

Myself and my brother attended the 50th anniversary service and were assured by the then-mayor of Dolgellau that a memorial would be built and placed at Penmaenpool.

Recently I passed though Penmaenpool on my way to Anglesey and was very saddened and disappointed to see that there is still no memorial, and only the small plaque placed there two years ago which does not contain the names of those who died that day.

I was a 14-year-old schoolboy when this tragedy happened. I am now a 66-year-old pensioner suffering from cancer and beginning to wonder will I ever see the names of those 15 people set in stone, or slate as the case may be, or are they just going to be forgotten about forever?

Yours etc,

Peter Watts, Sherington, Newport Pagnell.
