A PORTHMADOG woman has been promoted to Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet less than a year after her election as a county councillor.
Cllr Nia Jeffreys was appointed by council leader Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn.
Cllr Jeffreys, who represents the Dwyrain Porthmadog ward, will be taking up the role of Cabinet member for corporate support services with responsibility for corporate support, corporate governance and legal services.
She becomes the only female Cabinet member following the resignation of Cllr Mair Rowlands earlier this month.
Since being elected to Gwynedd Council in May 2017, Cllr Jeffreys has been a member of the democratic services committee and vice chair of the council’s education and economy scrutiny committee.
Cllr Jeffreys went to Ysgol Eifionydd in Porthmadog but has since lived abroad, in London and Cardiff pursing a successful career in communications – working for private, public and voluntary organisations, before returning to Gwynedd.
She began her career in the House of Commons working for Dafydd Wigley MP, before moving to British Gas, the Chwarae Teg charity and then Asthma UK Cymru as national director for Wales.
She currently works for Natural Resources Wales.
She is also a member of Porthmadog Town Council and local group CaruPort which is very active in promoting the town.
Cllr Jeffreys said: “I was born and bought up in Gwynedd so it is a great honour for me to serve on the Cabinet.
“I look forward to the challenges ahead and promise to work tirelessly for the people of Gwynedd.”
Cllr Siencyn said: “I’m delighted to welcome Cllr Nia Jeffreys as a member of the Gwynedd Council Cabinet.
“Nia’s skills and experiences will be a real asset for the team and her enthusiasm to ensure the best for the people of Gwynedd is obvious to everyone.”
