A PORTHMADOG councillor has hit out over the state of ‘an eyesore’ chapel, which is at the gateway to the town and in close proximity to the war memorial.
Cllr Jason Humphreys, who represents Porthmadog East, is concerned that the Zion Chapel, near Ysgol Eifionydd, has degraded to the point where it has become an “eyesore”.
The building, built in 1867, has been empty for nearly a decade after plans to turn the building into flats were never fulfilled.
“The old Zion Chapel is right next door to our war memorial and also at a key gateway point of our town,” Cllr Humphreys said.
“It’s totally unacceptable to have such a terrible eyesore right next to the town’s most poignant location.
“It received a planning permission in 2007 and 2012 to convert it into flats, but it’s been left there to rot.
“I’ve been in touch with the council, they’ve secured the gates and have been in touch with the owners.
“I’m told that this isn’t a building regulations issue as there’s no apparent danger to the public, but they are looking further into what can be done.”
The concerned councillor has received several comments from angry residents about the untidy state of the building.
