PLAID Cymru candidate Dafydd Llywelyn has been re-elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for the Dyfed Powys region.

Mr Llywelyn came out on top at the count in Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi in Llandysul this afternoon, securing 94,488 first and second votes with Jon Burns (Conservative) gaining 77,408 votes over the two rounds of counting.

Speaking at Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi following the result, Mr Llywelyn, who is from Llandysul, said: “I’d like to thank all of the candidates that have conducted a very positive campaign under difficult circumstances.

"The role of police and crime commissioner is often misunderstood, and I will once again approach a further term in office positively engaging with all communities across the Dyfed Powys area irrespective of any party politics.

“I will fight for our communities to ensure the best possible service.

“Thank you to my family and the support I receive.”

Speaking after being re-elected, Mr Llywelyn added: "I am extremely pleased to be re-elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner."As your current commissioner, operational, front-line policing has, and always will come before party politics."I have a strong track record of delivering on my promises and of listening to the communities of Dyfed Powys. I am proud of what I have achieved since 2016, but there is still so much to do. “Your safety is my top priority. I want to ensure that the Dyfed Powys Police Force remains one of the safest places to live in Wales and England.” Voting for the Police and Crime Commissioner was conducted across Wales on Thursday but the count was delayed until Sunday due to coronavirus regulations.

The Dyfed Powys region collated votes from Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Powys.

In Ceredigion, Dafydd Llywelyn secure the most votes with 15,954 first choice crosses.

Jon Burns (Conservative) received 6,021 votes in Ceredigion with Philippa Thompson (Labour) gaining 4,060 votes and Glyn Preston (Liberal Democrat) gaining 3,016 votes.

No candidate has received more than 50 per cent of the vote during the first round of counting, which meant Dafydd Llywelyn and Jon Burns went head to head and second votes were counted.
