LAMPETER town councillors have moved a step closer to taking over a popular play area which is in danger of falling into disrepair.

The Maes-y-Felin play area, presently owned by the Tai Ceredigion housing association, is extensively used by local youngsters.

Lampeter Town Council is now poised to take on a 99-year lease to secure the park’s future after Tai Ceredigion chiefs warned they would no longer be maintaining its equipment.

“It would cost us something between £500 and £1,000 to upgrade the park,” town mayor Chris Thomas told the Cambrian News.

“It’s an ongoing issue because play equipment obviously has a set life and some of the equipment in that park currently needs replacing.”

He said the issue was a legacy of when Tai Ceredigion took over all social-housing from Ceredigion County Council in 2008; a takeover that included play areas.
