AN Aberystwyth man has written his own play about the Nanteos Cup after spending years trying in vain to find the original 1930s script.

Four years ago, Ian Pegler began a quest to rediscover a script for a 1930s pageant-play, performed in Aberystwyth Castle grounds, about the Nanteos Cup.

Starting with nothing more than a photograph discovered on the internet, Ian Pegler eventually discovered the play had been written by a vicar of Strata Florida, Rev Hugh Lunt, who died in 1941.

The play was performed at Aberystwyth Castle in 1932 as part of Aberystwyth Carnival Week, and again in 1934 as part of Aberystwyth Week.

Ian’s quest was reported in the Cambrian News, but despite many enquiries and suggestions from local people, Ian was unable to discover a copy of the script and was forced to admit defeat.

Now he has written his own pageant-play along similar lines to the original and has made this available as a book.

“Lunt’s play was based on a legend that the Cup was made from a piece of the True Cross on which Christ was crucified,” Ian told the Cambrian News.

“But my version is based on the more popular story that the Cup is the Holy Grail, brought from Glastonbury at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, to Strata Florida Abbey in mid Wales.

“The Holy Grail story has more dramatic potential than the True Cross story which is older but less well known."
