ABERYSTWYTH University has said a “survey” is being undertaken of the buildings it owns in an historic street labelled by residents as an “eyesore” and “disgrace”.

The listed buildings along Laura Place at the rear of the Old College and in front of St Michael’s Church have been visited by council officers following concerns from residents, one of whom said the buildings were a “disgrace” and an “embarrassment to the town”.

Numbers 1 to 12 Laura Place, which include the Assembly Rooms - one of several owned by the university - are all Grade II listed.

The Assembly Rooms building, which has rubbish piling up in stairwells and graffiti scratched into its exterior white walls, was the original home of the National Library of Wales.

Numbers 1, 9 and 10 (The Assembly Rooms) are owned by the university, which said that while it carries out “statutory maintenance”, university workers are in the midst of planning schedules of work to the buildings.

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said that officers had visited the buildings but “determined that there are no issues of imminent danger presented at this time.”
