THE future of Aberystwyth’s former Arriva bus depot in Park Avenue should become clearer in September.

The site has been identified as a major potential development site in the town after the council used Welsh Government loan funding to buy the former depot to offer a potential development site to developers.

The council had also included other land around the site which is owned by the authority.

Potential options put forward in February this year were rejected by council Cabinet members, but a council spokesperson confirmed that the authority had been in further talks with interested developers.

The spokesperson said: “The council has continued to dialogue with interested parties. The development brief for the site is currently being amended with the intention of presenting a report to Cabinet in September to consider options for the site going forwards.”

The options considered in February were not made public, but the council confirmed that none of them were acceptable, although said it was expecting to ask for further options during the year.

The former Arriva depot has been empty after Arriva withdrew bus services in Ceredigion in 2013.

The council bought the site using the Welsh Government’s Town Centre Loans Fund which is aimed at bringing empty properties in town centres back into use.

It was agreed by the authority in 2015 to ask for development proposals, with the council saying it would consider proposals that included using the current Park Avenue car park behind the depot, although the council insisted that any loss of parking spaces would mean a developer had to provide parking facilities elsewhere in the town.
