AN ALDI supermarket is still on the cards for Aberystwyth.
It had been thought that the development planned for the site of the old Cambrian Garage next to the police station in Boulevard St Brieuc had been scrapped because a deal with a hotel chain for the upper floors had fallen through.
And there was confusion recently when Aldi refused to confirm whether the plans were still going ahead when demolition of buildings on the site started.
However, documents which have now been submitted to Ceredigion Council’s planning department to vary the conditions of the original planning permission granted in April 2011 confirm that the company is still planning to go ahead with the scheme.
A letter from agents employed by Aldi says that Aldi wants the conditions of the permission to be varied to allow demolition work to be carried out before information required by the council is lodged.
The letter says: “On behalf of my client, Aldi Stores Ltd, please find enclosed an application, submitted in accordance with S73 of the Town and Country Planning Act (1990) to vary the terms of conditions imposed on planning permission reference A090312. That permission was granted to Aldi by notice dated 15 April 2011.
“Aldi remains committed to the future development of the site and has recently acquired part of the site’s freehold from the county council."
