A MOTHER fighting for safety measures outside her child’s school has accused the council of “backtracking” after it announced dropping off and picking up were allowed.

Despite “threats and intimidation” from other parents, mum-of-two Kelly Cable has been fighting to put an end to illegal parking outside Plascrug School by posting pictures of cars parked illegally on her Facebook group, ‘Stop illegal parking around schools’.

After the Cambrian News reported on the issue in December, Mrs Cable’s campaigning led to a meeting at the school last month which was attended by parents, headteacher Menna Sweeney, police, a council civil enforcement officer — who used to be known as traffic wardens — and local councillors Paul James and Alun Williams.

But Mrs Cable, who said she recorded the meeting and has since listened back to it, has accused the council of going back on their word after they announced that, while it was illegal to park outside the school, it is permissible for people to “immediately board or alight” from vehicles.

A council spokesperson said: “It is the authority’s view that, due to the prohibition of waiting, loading and unloading restrictions currently in place it is illegal for any vehicles to be parked — including vehicles being loaded/unloaded — however it allows drivers to stop to enable people to immediately board or alight from the vehicle.”

Mrs Cable told the Cambrian News: “It was discussed that, as the road has been adopted and is now an official highway, the roundabout should be treated like others in the town.

“Where people are stopping, it creates an obstruction and is therefore a danger to other road users, pedestrians and children of the school."
