A retired headteacher from Aberystwyth is proving that age is just a number after scooping a silver medal at the World Mountain Running Championships in Italy.
Dic Evans, now in his 70s, has been one of mid Wales’ most prominent runners for over half a century and has represented Wales and Great Britain on numerous occasions and in various disciplines.
He was also recently the Welsh team manager for Wales’ most famous mountain race, Ras yr Wyddfa/Snowdon Race.
Still going strong after his retirement, the former Ysgol John Rhys, Ponterwyd headteacher’s latest international duty took him to the World Mountain Running Championships in Puglia where he was representing the GB team in the M70 category.
The tough mountain course in Gagliano del Capo saw the runners climb a total of 330 metres over a challenging 6.5km.
Even though Dic had been suffering with long-term injury, he pulled out a brilliant eighth position in the M70 category, with a time of 52:35.
His run was good enough to earn himself, and his British teammates James Patterson and Steve Herington, a fantastic silver team medal behind a very strong Italian group.
Far from resting on his laurels, Dic was due to represent Wales in the British and Irish Cross Country Masters International at Aintree today.
