Aberystwyth stalwart Meirion Appleton will lead the line at this year’s Parêd Gwyl Dewi.
A well-known and respected face on the football fields of Ceredigion and Wales, Meirion Appleton, has been chosen named as Tywysydd, or guide, at Aberystwyth’s 2020 Parêd Gwyl Dewi (St David’s Day Parade) held on Saturday, 29 February.
The honour of Tywysydd is given every year at the Parêd to a local Aberystwyth person or people for their commitment and dedication to Wales and the Welsh language and life.
On this honour, Meirion said: “Leading the Parade will be a privilege and a pleasure.
“It was a lovely and unexpected surprise. It’s a huge honour. I remember walking from Capel Seion to Aberystwyth many times to watch games in the 1950s.
“My dream was to become the coach of the club then - and it was a privilege to have that honour. I never thought I would have this honour of being Tywysydd on St David’s Day. Aberystwyth and the Welsh language means a lot to me.”
Parade chair Sion Jobbins said: “We are delighted that Meirion Appleton has accepted to be our guide this year.
"Meirion has always ensured that the Welsh language is given a high profile in football both locally and nationally."
