THE organiser of Machynlleth Christmas Charity Fair is passing on the baton after almost 30 years.

Maureen and Geoffrey Sedgwick started the fair in 1988 and, thanks to Maureen’s commitment, it has continued to run every year apart from a couple when local Oxfam members took it on.

Sadly Geoffrey passed away in 1989 and the running of the fair was left to Maureen, but from this year Maureen has passed the baton on to John and Sabrina Cantor who hope to do as good a job as she has done over the last few decades.

Maureen said: “I am happy I have handed the organising on to two pairs of very capable hands.”

Over the last 30 years, the fair has become a regular feature in the lead up to Christmas, raising thousands of pounds for various charities and becoming an annual opportunity for friends and acquaintances to meet over a cup of tea or a bowl of soup and catch up.

There is usually something to buy for everyone – from the tiniest baby to the hard-to-buy-for relative.

It is also an opportunity to see what charity work is being done in and around Machynlleth that people can get involved with.

The annual Christmas Charity Fair will be held on Saturday, 25 November, at Y Plas, Machynlleth, from 10am to 3pm.
