Royal British Legion

THE LEGION met on Tuesday, 5 April, when the meeting was opened by vice-chairman Stephen Doyle at 2pm. The exhortation was given in English by Anthony Jones and in Welsh by Martin Riley. Minutes from the March meeting were read and certified.Names were sought for the trip on Armed Forces Day at Bodelwyddan Castle on 18 June and it was decided to allow non-Legion members to attend. The price will be £12 each.Anthony Jones told members an event will be held on 26 June to mark the cente-nary of the Battle of the Somme at a time to be announced.Anthony told the members that he had been informed by Colour Sgt Geraint Rowlands that he had nine definite new cadets, and that there would be an open day at the Drill Hall soon.Kath Holt reminded members that the cadets are affiliated to the Machynlleth Legion branch and had helped a lot during the Poppy Appeal.Stephen Doyle told the group that he would like to start having a ten-pin bowling evening at Clarach Bay again. After a discussion, this was left in abeyance. Anthony informed members that chair-man Richie Jones had been in hospital, but is home now and that both Eufyl Williams and Ruby Brennan had been in hospital. Kath also suggested that petrol money could be given to families to help with costs to visit Legion members in hospital and Anthony told members that the money would come out of the benevolent fund.Evelyn Jones told the members that she hoped to hold the annual Name the Teddy Bear fund-raiser at the local Co-op on 15 June from 10am to 4pm.Elsbeth McAuley, Kath Holt and Pauline Davies said they would help on the day.Planning for the Mach’ carnival was discussed and Stephen Doyle informed the members that a trailer would be available for the branch again this year again for its participation on 23 July.The theme for the carnival this year is heroes and villains.

LLEW Coch A players marched proudly to collect the major silverware after dominating the Machynlleth and District Pool League team knockout finals at Plas Machynlleth Community Hall on Saturday, 16 April.Already crowned Division One champions, all-conquering Llew Coch A swept the board as they secured the League Cup and the Dai Wyn Davies Division One Cup, beating Tredegar Arms and Rugby Club A respectively.Also enjoying the thrill of success were Foresters, who sealed victory against Slaters in the Corey Rowlands Division Two Cup, and White Lion, who celebrated victory over Tredegar Arms in the Peter Hampton Cup.

POWYS Diabetes Patient and Carers Groups are asking those with diabetes or caring for someone with diabetes to come along and join them.Powys Diabetes Patient and Carers Groups are being set up to give local people with diabetes and their carers the chance to meet and give their views about the services they receive and how well these meet their needs.
