A KIND-HEARTED pensioner has given up his free time to befriend and care for patients and visitors at Tywyn Hospital.

Neville Taylor, 74, has become the first volunteer to sign up as a Robin helper, offering a friendly face to talk to.

Robin volunteers support patients during their stay in hospital, carrying out a variety of tasks including assisting patients and their families, carrying out errands and spending time chatting with day visitors.

Neville volunteers as a Robin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3.30pm until 6pm, and tries to visit the hospital at weekends whenever he has a chance.

Neville has a long-standing interest in caring for other people, and originally moved to Tywyn in 1974 from the Midlands to care for two of his relatives.

Neville, who has spent most of his working life running pubs and social clubs, said: “Caring for my Uncle Alan and Aunty Wyn was what gave me a passion for caring.

“I just really enjoy spending time with people and helping them. Even if it’s just in small ways, you really see they appreciate a bit of company and a chat.

“I really enjoyed mixing with other people. I worked in the licensing trade for 30 years, so I know how to talk, it’s a habit you don’t drop.”
