A CAMPAIGNER calling for Bodlondeb care home to be kept open has questioned if an Aberystwyth councillor has visited the home after he told a town council meeting that the building is “at the end of its life”.

Plaid Cymru town and county councillor Mark Strong made the claim during an Aberystwyth Town Council meeting that Bodlondeb was “not cost effective” and that the building was reaching the end of its life.

But former Aberystwyth mayor Elwyn Williams hit back and questioned if Cllr Strong had seen the condition of Bodlondeb for himself, even offering to accompany Cllr Strong on a tour of the home.

Mr Williams, whose brother is a resident in Bodlondeb, said: “Cllr Strong said the building has come to the end of its life. Has he seen it? I haven’t seen his name signed in the visitor book. I’d welcome the opportunity to meet with him and take him around the building so he can see it for himself.

“I was looking at the building recently and it’s absolutely fine.

“There are a lot of buildings in much worse condition than that in the county.

“Years ago, when they tried to close Bodlondeb it was said that repairs and maintenance would cost £800,000, but when we spoke to the architect he said it wasn’t his figure and then gave a figure of £300,000, less than half.

“If we had someone in to look at their figure now of £3.1m, I’m sure it would be cheaper.”
