Aberystwyth’s Bronglais Hospital is set to have its first dedicated chemotherapy day unit, after years of patients having to endure treatment in a busy corridor.
The Cambrian News can reveal that the hospital’s much-heralded Y Banwy ward will be “repurposed” to be used as a chemotherapy day unit, just three years after it was opened.
The 12-bed unit, which was introduced in February 2016, was established to provide step-down care for patients who no longer needed hospital care, but were waiting for care packages to be put in place before they could return home.
Despite the unit being hailed a success by Hywel Dda Health Board, the board’s director of operations, Joe Teape, has admitted they are looking to abandon it and instead use the ward as a chemotherapy day unit.
There have been a range of fundraising events aimed at raising £1.5m for a new chemotherapy unit at Bronglais, including a ball organised by emergency service workers that raised a massive £21,980 in November last year.
