Bronglais Hospital had the second-best performing A&E in Wales in December 2019, figures have shown.
The statistics show that while Bronglais missed the target of seeing 95 per cent of people within four hours, it saw 77.1 per cent of patients inside the four-hour target time, with only the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff having a higher percentage at 80.3.
While December was described as bringing “unprecedented pressure”, Bronglais only had 12 extra patients attending compared to November 2019, when the department saw 80.3 per cent of patients inside four hours.
In December 2018, 2,372 patients attended the Bronglais A&E with 86.6 per cent being seen within four hours.
Bronglais Hospital’s A&E department has consistently been the best performing major unit in the Hywel Dda area, with December 2019 seeing Glangwili see 71.1 per cent of patients inside four hours and Withybush see 66.2 per cent inside four hours, although both of those hospitals saw more patients attend.
Hywel Dda as a whole saw 71 per cent of patients at major A&E units inside four hours, with only Cardiff & Vale Health Board doing better, but Cardiff & Vale only have one major unit at the University Hospital of Wales.
Neighbouring Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board continued its struggles with figures showing it was the worst performing health board in Wales, seeing only 56.4 per cent of patients within four hours at its major A&E units.
