A CLOSE-KNIT community group is hoping to keep a Meirionnydd myth alive by making a giant scarf the size of a mountain.

This year’s late-night Christmas shopping event in Dolgellau will take place in early December, where the Hwyl Nadolig Dolgellau group hope to unveil a special early festive present.

The group, set up with the help of business owners in Eldon Square, are hoping to knit Idris Gawr (Idris the Giant) a scarf, which will then be used to benefit the wider community.

Idris, who uses Cader Idris as his throne, according to local folklore, will of course need a scarf of suitable length for his mighty neck.

So the community group is asking knitters, weavers, crocheters, and anyone else to create a six-inch-square patch to donate to the project, which will all go toward creating Idris’ woollen wonder.

“We’ve already received squares from Germany and Cumbria, but word is spreading all over,” said Sue Barnes of Draig Dipsy Dragon, a craft shop.

“We want local schools and organisations to help too, we’d love to make a scarf big enough to reach the top of Cader Idris itself (893 metres)!

“We will keep people updated as we go along before the grand reveal on 7 December.”

After the project is completed, blankets will then be handed to those in need to keep them warm through the winter.

If you wish to donate materials or squares to the project, please make contact with any of the shops on Eldon Square or send an email to [email protected]
