The people of Pwllheli are set to benefit from free wifi and upgraded CCTV, thanks to investment from the council.
The mayor of Pwllheli told the Cambrian News that solving the issue of digital inclusivity is “paramount”, and the town council has earmarked funds for a free wifi scheme which will launch in the new year.
The council spent £2,500 to cover the costs involved in setting up an external wifi connection throughout the centre, and will pay a further £1,000 a year, minus any revenue created.
Mayor Eric Wyn Roberts told the Cambrian News that the scheme is operational now but there have been some “teething” problems so it won’t be officially launched until the new year.
Cllr Roberts hopes the wifi scheme will make the internet more accessible and inclusive.
“Not everybody has the capability to have 4G, so with the free wifi we’re trying to include everybody,” he said.
“It will be beneficial to everyone; young and old. Everything nowadays is online, and the importance to include everybody digitally is paramount.
“People have been using it over the past couple of months, so it is working. There are some areas that we need to finalise, these things need time. But it’s been very positive; I think it’s yet another thing to boost the town.
“Any income created will be invested back into the town of Pwllheli.”
