THE ‘Aegean’, which was filmed on Shell Island, will receive its premiere in Barmouth next week.
At 6.30pm on Saturday, 8 July, Barmouth’s Dragon Theatre will screen the Greek classic with a modern twist. “We are hoping to attract as many people as possible,” said production manager, Richie Howle.
’Aegean’ is an adaption of the Greek tale of Theseus and the Minotaur, set during the Second World War.
The 30-minute film follows Aegeus as he toils with the fact that his son is leaving for war, and features actors from the Meirionnydd area.
Director Charlie Rowlands, writer producer Richie Howle and editor Jack Allen enjoyed creating their own masterpiece and, explaining why they choose to film in west Wales, Richie said: “Jack has family in Barmouth which gives us a good base of operations in the area. On top of this I have always enjoyed going on holiday to Shell Island.
“We messaged the island to see if filming there was possible and they said yes, so it was cemented after that.”
He went on: “We all agree that every story told is just an adaption of an older story, so why not pick something as iconic and meaningful as Theseus and the Minotaur, a story we feel hasn’t been done in the way we plan on doing it.
“We modernise the tale to the Second World War and instead of following Theseus on his mission, we stay at home with Aegeus, where we see what it’s like to be left behind.”
The thought-provoking production is for their university course, but the trio hope to take their creation further and get it into film festivals.
“We just want to thank the community for their incredible support, especially the Dragon Theatre and Shell Island,” Richie said.
Tickets for the film are available from the Dragon Theatre.
