A SPECIAL art exhibition is being hosted by the Magic Lantern cinema to celebrate the Faces of Tywyn.
The exhibition has been organised to celebrate the screening of a new film by veteran film-maker, Agnes Varga, who has forged an unexpected collaboration with photographer JR as they embark on a road trip like no other, to create the film Faces, Places.
The two artists share a passion for images and how they’re created, displayed and shared: Varda through cinema, JR through his emotionally arresting outdoor installations.
They set out in JR’s Photo booth-enhanced truck, exploring the villages and small towns of rural France and meeting its humble residents - all the while creating large-scale portraits plastered across unconventional locations.
The film, which is to be screened on its release date in Tywyn, inspired staff at the cinema so much, they decided to recreate the project themselves.
The Magic Lantern’s venue manager, Sara Waddington, said: “The film celebrates images and communities and we thought, we can do that too! We launched a photography competition.
"The theme was Faces of Tywyn and Beyond and all images had to be in black and white.
“We have had an incredible response and since the film displays it’s photographs in unusual places we have installed our images in the window of Coop. We wanted to make sure as many people as possible get to see them as it is a beautiful collage of our community.”
The Magic Lantern will be hosting a glitzy, red carpet opening night of Faces, Places on Friday, 21 September.
All the photos submitted will be on display and Eileen Jones, vice-chairman of Tywyn Town Council will be awarding the prizes to the winners of the Faces of Tywyn and Beyond Photography Competition, which was judged by Cambrian News photographer Erfyl Lloyd Davies.
The event will be an opportunity for the people of Tywyn and the surrounding villages to get together and celebrate their community.
The fun will continue after the film with an open quiz around the cinema, based on Faces and Places.
